2018 Archaeology Day Event at New South’s Stone Mountain campus

A little bit about the history of New South’s Archaeology Day…

Archaeology Day wasn’t always hosted at New South’s Stone Mountain campus. In fact, for a number of years, New South participated in Fernbank’s Archaeology Day celebration. In 2012, New South jumped on the opportunity to host their own Archaeology Day Open House at the main campus in Stone Mountain. This event opened the campus to the public for the first time and provided opportunities for people of all ages to learn more about archaeology from real professional archaeologists. Each year since, hundreds of local community members flock to participate in this engaging, lively event.

Exhibits over the years have included Abby the Archaeobus, basket weaving, excavation, atlatl alley, pottery, storytelling, stone tools, mortuary archaeology, and zooarchaeology. Local organizations and universities, such as the Society for Georgia Archaeology and its local chapters, the Georgia DOT, Kennesaw State University, the University of Georgia, Georgia Southern University, and Georgia State University have participated in and supported this annual event.

To promote the health of the community and support social distancing regulations, New South decided to transform Archaeology Day 2020 into a virtual, month-long event! In 2021, we continued our efforts to bring you a month of exciting virtual archaeology events and activities. In 2022, we brought back the in-person event while expanding our virtual offerings.

Each year, this event serves to impassion the public about all things archaeology, and to empower those who participate by providing them with the tools to learn, stay informed, and get active. Catered to people of all ages, this event has something for everyone. This experience will leave you with a deeper understanding of the human past and will inspire you to join in the fight to preserve our shared cultural resources.

We can’t wait for you to become part of the New South community where we celebrate and uncover our shared cultural heritage. Thank you for joining us!
